Dear Friend of the Arts,
In this age of activism, particularly on the heels of George Floyd, many of us are seeking ways to make a meaningful impact and be counted.
And though we can't cure the major issues that plague us: Covid-19, racism or world hunger, we can support causes that mirror our values and interests.
We can champion worthy projects that uplift, empower and enrich the lives of others.
Accordingly, Poets United is proud to announce the formation of its first memorial scholarship in 2020. Purposed to honor the lives and legacies of Michael Bowie and Robin Denise Williams.
These former writers, humanitarians and arts advocates were valued members of the creative community for decades, up until the time of their deaths.
Collectively, their poetry, articles and short stories graced the pages of numerous online and print publications.
Michael Bowie was one of the original members of Poets United, (serving for over 20 years).
Robin Denise Williams was an educator in the Chicago Public Schools system for 18 years and was an emerging talent with an amazing gift.
One scholarship of approximately $500.00 will be awarded to one male and one female high school senior majoring in creative writing or communications and accepted at an accredited college or university in Illinois for 2020. These individuals must also have a G.P.A of 3.0 or better and be of good character (evidenced by the submission of 2 letters of recommendation).
Scholarship recipients will also be required to complete an essay (on a specific topic) and successfully complete an interview by selected judges.
Scholarships funds can be used for books, supplies and college-related costs.
