· For the reader and writer, we publish short stories, poetry, essays, literary criticism, book reviews, and biographical profiles of authors, interviews, letters, and academic essays or treatise.

· For the writer, we strive to publish thoughtful and unique conversations about grammar, writing, prose styles, poetry, literary genres, writing advice, and the publishing industry; we post current news and information about the publishing industry and literary agents, regularly. We also promote other sites that we feel enhance the education of writers.

Highland Park in Our Hearts...

 

Poets United extends its deepest sympathy and collective prayers for the Highland Park Community and those devastated by the recent shootings amid the 4th of July parade celebration.

At times like these, words can not adequately express the pain, grief and senselessness of it all.

We can only hope that something positive emerges from this in days ahead (reform regarding gun control, screening and access; additional mental health resources; increased awareness and intervention for those who pose potential threats to the public).   

Let's all do our parts to increase peace.

Our children deserve a better world. 

Praying for a safe summer for all.

Recommended Reads For National Poetry Month...

 

With just a few weeks left until National Poetry Month officially ends, I wanted to take this time to share some noteworthy reads that I believe you'll enjoy.  

In fact, I'm betting that these titles will potentially remain in your personal library beyond this month... for years to come. Some books are recently published, while others are "oldies but goodies."

LOVING A BLACK WOMAN

--DARRYL HARVEY

This 69-paged, three section read is romantic, sensual, silly and raw. I found myself gushing and blushing from beginning to end. And you will too. Some of my favorite selections include: Animal, City Girl, Cyber, and Kiwi. Trust me, you'll love "Loving a Black Woman" even if you're not a Black woman.

THE ROSE THAT GREW FROM CONCRETE

--TUPAC SHAKUR

Few would deny Tupac's iconic status in the world of the arts and as an activist for justice. More than a rapper, he was dynamic, smart, creative and hugely talented. In this popular read, Tupac reveals his sensitive side, personal battles and inner-reflections. Topics include everything from love, to freedom, to government assistance, and even a poem written for actress Jada Pinkett (or one would assume, given recent news accounts).

On page 89, in the poem entitled "4 Jada" he shares: "u bring me to climax without sex...u R the omega of my heart." Deep stuff. His piece "In the Event of my Demise" is profound and prophetic. A must read. 

WE HAVE YOUR LOVE

--SPORTY KING

This engaging chapbook (originally released more than a decade ago) is short and sweet. King reigns supreme in his use of imagery, his "creative license," and clever play on words. My all-time favorite is "You Kept me up Late Last Night."

ERNEST HEMINGWAY 88 POEMS

I love getting lost in the language of former times and the expressions of literary legends. "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." This compilation provides an interesting glimpse into the life and lessons of this very celebrated author. It's divided into 4 groups, with hand-written notes and black and white images to enhance. It also includes many historical references. Readers will enjoy the diversity of topics included and the varying lengths.

CLOSING THOUGHT

I hope you'll consider expanding your literary horizons this year by exploring the works of new poets; poets of different backgrounds; different eras; and ideologies and creative approaches perhaps different than your own.

Doing so will greatly enrich you, entertain you and help to hone your craft.

Poets United Seeks Applicants For the Robin Denise Williams Memorial Scholarship

 

In its ongoing mission to advance poetry, foster greater appreciation for the creative arts, and support emerging writers and poets, Poets United is currently seeking applications for its Robin Denise Williams Memorial Writing Scholarship for 2022.

ELIGIBILITY:

The program is open to students 17 years (high school Junior/Seniors)

Adults 18 years or older (college Freshman-Seniors)

Majoring in (or pursuing) a degree in journalism, marketing, poetry or a related field. 

AWARD AMOUNT:

A 1X scholarship of $400.00 will be awarded to one selected male OR female. 

Funds may be used toward:

• Tuition-related expenses
• Website creation 
• Textbooks
• Computer Equipment or upgrade

CRITERIA:

Students must have a 3.0 G.P.A. and complete an essay on a designated topic by the deadline date.

2022 TOPICS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

HOW HAS THE PANDEMIC SHAPED YOUR FUTURE CAREER GOALS AND WHAT’S YOUR GAME PLAN TO ACHIEVE THEM?

HOW CAN WRITERS USE SOCIAL MEDIA RESPONSIBLY TO “MAKE FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE“?

IF YOU COULD INTERVIEW ONE FAMOUS PERSON, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Applicants must choose one of the above topics and create a 250-500 word essay. Relevant poems on these topics are also acceptable. 

Essays and poems will be judged on creativity, originality and content.

Def Poetry Jam* A Review

Welcome back, readers!

After a brief summer break, Poets United is back on the scene with new and exciting things. Stay tuned for details.

Even though the pandemic has prevented us from performing around Chicago at various venues (including our monthly readings at our local library), we have still been actively engaged in poetic pursuits. This includes virtual readings, Poetry on 'Da Patio intimate gatherings, poetry discussions, and even sharing poetry over the phone. 

I've also participated in a few poetry contests as well.

It's important that we as creative artists keep our skills sharp; keep sharing important messages of hope and healing; and that we keep our minds active. 

Word up!

To practice what I preach, recently I have been viewing various poetry performances of spoken word artists across the world in video form and online. 

HERE'S THE 4-1-1...ON DEF POETRY JAM SPECIFICALLY

If you dig poetry and the art of Spoken Word, you'll love Def Poetry Jam. There is something here to appeal to every taste and literary leaning.

Def Poetry Jam is a former HBO series presented by Russell Simmons and hosted by Mos Def.

In various DVD taped episodes, poets from around the globe perform their works reflecting an array of perspectives, pet peeves, experiences and styles of expression. No topic is taboo. 

There are poems here on love, infidelity, racial injustice, body image, politics and everything under the sun. 

Delivered by wordsmiths that are new and emerging artists, as well as seasoned professionals. Including "poetry royalty" like M.C. Lyte, Jill Scott and Oscar Brown J.R. (a Chicago celebrity).  

As I watched, I found myself laughing; shedding tears; nodding my head in agreement; and simply being in total awe of the talent assembled.

I also felt a great sense of pride to be a part of such a powerful community. 

The same sense of pride in witnessing Amanda Gorman's Presidential reading.

Poets rock! There's no doubt about it. 

In fact, if you're a poet reading this, I give you permission to take a quick bow now. Go ahead...I'll wait.

Now, as I was sayin'...

Though there were so many noteworthy performances, one of my favorites was CHILDREN OF CHILDREN, by Oscar Brown Jr.

Poetry On 'Da Patio Event a Huge Success!

 

Due to the perils of the pandemic, many of Poets United's in-person activities had to be placed on hold for the year of 2020/2021. With restrictions lifted and the city gradually re-opening, thankfully, we were able to take our interaction potentially off of Zoom on July 2nd, and soar to new heights! Pun intended.

Our backyard poetry parties are among our most popular offerings, and this one exceeded my expectations. We were divinely blessed with perfect weather (despite consecutive days of down pour.)

The menu consisted of: fried chicken, tacos, spaghetti, french fries, fried rice, wine, champagne, delicious desserts, and even a candy buffet for guests.

As the pictures will reflect, the gathering was attended by all different age groups and represented an array of styles of expression.

We partied hard...which included a few of the line dances and Cha-Cha slides. 

We look forward with anticipation and hope to next year's sequel. A special thanks to all of the poets and supporters who contributed to the event's success!
