Poetry Corner* Dr. Archan Mehta

Alumni Party

Dear Friend,

At our Alumni party

I swear I did not

Recognize you:

How you have changed

With the passing years:

Wrinkled-skin and a bag of bones

Lost muscle mass

And yellow-stained teeth,

Falling to pieces

A head shaped like a bald eagle

And an old and broken pipe

Dangling from your mouth.

But thanks for putting me

In touch with the mystery

Of existence—

How we need to move on

When we are no longer young.

Although we seek to

Recapture our lost youth.

And how we have failed,

Time and again, and have picked

Ourselves up from the dust.

How the setting sun has

Not dimmed our curiosity

And how we go on living even

As people around us pass on.

And, finally, how we remember

With nostalgic fondness our

Glory days when all seemed

Like sweetness and light

And how we basked in the

Orange glow of a brighter sun.
